We can’t help with private rentals
We only act for council and housing association tenants, so we can’t take this on. Here’s where you can get help for free:
- Report the problem to your landlord or letting agent in writing, and keep a copy.
- Contact your council’s private sector housing team (find your council on GOV.UK). They can inspect your home and can require a landlord to carry out repairs.
- Get free advice from Shelter or Citizens Advice.
We only act for tenants in England
As your home isn’t in England, we can’t help with this one. These organisations give free housing advice:
- Wales: Shelter Cymru
- Scotland: Shelter Scotland
- Northern Ireland: Housing Rights
Report it to your landlord first
Your landlord usually needs to know about a problem before it has to fix it. Here’s what to do:
- Tell your landlord in writing if you can (email, online form, app or letter) and keep a copy or reference number.
- Take dated photos of the problem, and keep taking them if it gets worse.
- If it isn’t fixed, use your landlord’s complaints process. Council and housing association tenants can then go to the Housing Ombudsman. Both are free.
- Free advice is also available from Shelter and Citizens Advice.
If the repairs still aren’t done after you’ve reported them, come back and check again, or WhatsApp us on 07518 906452.

How it works
Three simple steps
- 1
We check
Answer a few questions here or on WhatsApp. It takes about two minutes.
- 2
We call
We call you to talk through the repairs and explain how no win, no fee works, including any costs.
- 3
We take it on
If we can help, we send you the paperwork to sign after the call, then push your landlord to do the repairs and claim compensation where it’s owed.
You can also complain to your landlord for free, using its complaints process. If you rent from a council or housing association, you can then take your complaint to the Housing Ombudsman, also for free.
FAQ
Common questions
Will I pay anything if I lose?
We work on a no win, no fee basis. If you lose: There’s no fee to pay. Terms apply.
If you win, our success fee is 25% of your compensation.
We arrange after-the-event (ATE) insurance to protect you against the other side’s legal costs. The premium is paid from your compensation, and only if you win.
Will the repairs still get done?
Yes. Getting the repairs done is part of the claim. We ask your landlord to carry out the repairs as well as dealing with compensation.
Always let your landlord in to inspect and do repairs. We never advise refusing access.
Do I need photos?
Photos help, but you don’t need them to start. Dated photos or videos of the damp, mould, leaks or damage are useful, along with any emails, letters or reference numbers from when you reported it.
You can add a few photos in the checker above or send them on WhatsApp to 07518 906452. Keep taking photos if things get worse.
Is this a free service?
No. We’re a firm of solicitors and we work on a no win, no fee basis. You pay nothing upfront, and if you lose: There’s no fee to pay. Terms apply. If you win, our fee comes out of your compensation.
There are free routes too. You can complain to your landlord through its complaints process, and council and housing association tenants can then go to the Housing Ombudsman. Shelter and Citizens Advice also give free advice.
